Aquapolo Ambiental Water Reuse Project

Overview

Aquapolo Ambiental is a water reuse venture created by Foz do Brasil (Odebrecht Organization) and Sabesp, a Brazilian state-owned utility that provides water and sewage services for residential, commercial, and industrial use in the municipalities of the state of São Paulo. The Aquapolo project was initiated to address new government regulations to restrict industrial use of potable water in São Paulo and is the largest industrial water reuse project in the Southern Hemisphere. Aquapolo will supply the Capuava Petrochemical Complex of Mauá, located in São Paulo’s ABC region, thereby conserving enough drinking water to continuously supply a population of 300,000 people.

The Challenge

To build a treatment plant capable of meeting São Paulo’s pressing demand for industrial reuse water.

The Solution

Koch Membrane Systems, Inc. (KMS), a leading supplier of wastewater treatment systems, provided PURON® membrane bioreactor (MBR) modules as well as MegaMagnum® reverse osmosis (RO) membranes, system design and controls, and after-market support and service for the Aquapolo project. KMS was chosen for its superior technical support and biological design, the availability of MBR and RO pilot plants, its vast experience with water-recycling projects, and ability to meet an extremely accelerated delivery schedule.

KMS conducted a comprehensive feasibility study to identify the most cost-effective strategy to upgrade the existing plant infrastructure and concluded that membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology with a Tertiary Membrane Bioreactor (TMBR) system was the best solution for the new facility.

“Koch Membrane Systems’ willingness to work with us as our technological partner was a key factor in our decision to award them the contract,” said Emyr Diniz Costa, Senior Project Director at Odebrecht. “They offered a comprehensive engineering solution and dedicated extensive pre-engineering man-hours to produce the most reliable design and the state-of-the art technology for our project. The availability of a pilot plant convinced us their solution was the best one.”

The Treatment Plant

In total, the Aquapolo project encompasses the construction of new a pretreatment step, installation of a chemical dosing system, and the construction of a 700 lps TMBR utilizing 94,500 m2 of membrane area. The TMBR offers lower operating costs, lower process risk, greenfield design, and negligible interaction with current plant operations and equipment.

The TMBR is a polishing MBR process. It will treat water coming from the existing secondary clarifiers and further treat it in a newly built biological step using membranes as the final separation process. Some of the TMBR effluent will be further treated by RO membranes to meet conductivity goals for water reuse.

The TMBR pilot demonstrated that the submerged membranes benefited from the optimized biological system. Average flux rates of >25 L/m2h were achieved and daily maintenance cleaning was found to enhance the UF performance. Recovery cleaning returned the UF membrane to the original process permeability. A standard RO pilot also was used to simulate the RO design concept of the proposed full scale system for 200 L/s feed water. The pilot trials were setup in three well-defined phases, a simple batch mode, a modified batch mode and a continuous mode. The RO system was able to produce an excellent water quality.

SEATTLE (AP) - The Seattle Kraken will be without forward Andre Burakovsky for the start of the Stanley Cup playoffs after he underwent surgery to address a lower-body injury.
The Seattle Kraken can see the finish line in their bid to qualify for the Stanley Cup playoffs in just their second year of existence. The Anaheim Ducks are one of the teams that stand in their path, and the Kraken will try to bump them aside when they meet on Thursday night in Seattle. The Kraken (40-25-8, 88 points) hold the first wild-card spot in the Western Conference with nine games remaining. Seattle is seven points out of third place in the Pacific Division and owns a three-point edge on the Winnipeg Jets, who hold the second wild card by two points over the Calgary Flames. The San Jose Sharks did the Kraken a favor when they beat the Jets 3-0 on Tuesday night, but Seattle would prefer to take care of business on its own. The Kraken are 3-4-2 in their past nine games, which has prevented them from solidifying a playoff spot. Seattle is also winless in its past four home games (0-3-1), with its last victory at Climate Pledge Arena coming against the Ducks on March 7, a 5-2 win. Kraken fans are also feeling impatient with their goalie situation. Philipp Grubauer was pulled in the most recent game, a 5-1 loss to the Minnesota Wild in St.

Paul, Minn., on Monday, after surrendering four goals on 13 shots. Martin Jones made six saves in relief. Grubauer has a 2.57 goals-against average for his 11-year NHL career, but is over 3.00 for the second straight year with the Kraken. Seattle coach Dave Hakstol doesn't seem to be panicking, however. "We need our depth to keep doing what they're doing," Hakstol said after practice Wednesday. The Ducks (23-41-10, 56 points) are in a much different boat than the Kraken. Loser of five in a row, Anaheim could be without its top two scorers, Trevor Zegras and Troy Terry, when it opens a three-game road trip in Seattle. Zegras, who leads Anaheim with 22 goals and 37 assists, sustained a lower-body injury in the first period of a 5-1 loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Monday. He tried to play through the pain, but eventually left after the second period and did not return. Zegras did not practice with the team in Anaheim on Wednesday, but he will accompany the Ducks on the trip and his status is day-to-day, Anaheim coach Dallas Eakins said. Terry will not make the trip, as his wife, Dani, is expecting their first child. Derek Grant, who scored the lone goal in the loss to Colorado, said the team can't make excuses for not playing well. "You have to show up every night, no matter where you are in the standings or what time of the year it is," Grant said.

The Seattle Kraken signed general manager Ron Francis to a three-year contract extension Wednesday, two weeks removed from a stirring run to the second round of the playoffs in just their second season. Francis, 60, now is signed through the 2026-27 season. Financial terms were not released by the club. "Ron has done remarkable work over the last four years and deserves this recognition," Seattle co-owner Samantha Holloway said.

Michael Hooper may have missed the Wallabies captaincy but he remains the centre of attention for a French team that fear the flanker's influence. blacksprut тор Les Bleus have taken no time to show the concern they harbour about Hooper's breakdown work ahead of Saturday night's series-opener at Suncorp Stadium.Inspirational France back-rower and captain Thierry Dusautoir rated the in-form Waratah the Wallabies' big danger while coach Phillipe Saint-Andre likened the 22-year-old to 111-Test great George Smith. He coached Smith at Toulon in 2010-11, and felt Hooper was just as important to the current Australian side.Hooper showed Smith-like qualities on the weekend when he bounced back into action immediately after a rib-rattling hit by giant Chiefs prop Ben Tameifuna.Saint-Andre highlighted the No.7's ability by showing his tour squad footage of his sharp, one-handed pilfer early on in the Wallabies last Test against Wales on November 30.The rapid-fire turnover immediately set in motion a scintillating backline try which featured a Quade Cooper flick pass to Joe Tomane who then put Christian Leali'ifano over in the 30-26 win at Millennium Stadium."(Hooper) reminds me of George Smith and I coached George at Toulon and I feel he's improved a lot," Saint-Andre said."In the contact area he's often the first to get his hands on the ball."Any contested ball he creates a lot of turnovers and when you know the quality and the skills and the speed of the Australian backs he's a key player for that."We have done a lot of work on the ruck contest and we showed how much he contested in the Tests in November."We saw how many turnovers he gets, and one was brilliant against Wales, which saw a fantastic try by the backline."Dusautoir is rated among the best flankers in the game and won his 2011 player of the year award on the back of an inspirational man-of-the-match display in Les Bleus 8-7 World Cup final loss to the All Blacks. But he didn't mind admitting the danger that Hooper, more renowned for his powerful ball running, presents at the breakdown."We have to work hard on our rucks to be efficient because we really fear him," the said. Many tipped Hooper to replace Ben Mowen and become the youngest Wallabies skipper in 67 years, but Ewen McKenzie instead appointed him deputy to Stephen Moore.
