Kể từ khi phát hiện ra quá trình bùn hoạt tính vào năm 1914 đã áp dụng nhiều phương pháp phân tích để tối ưu hóa hiệu suất của nhà máy xử lý nước thải. Các phép đo phân tích này báo cáo các điều kiện vận hành phù hợp, nhưng không ai cung cấp dữ liệu về sức khoẻ của vi sinh vật trong Bùn Hoạt Tính. Kết quả là nhiều nhà máy rơi vào tình trạng đầu vào ô nhiễm chất độc hại, Bể lắng quá tải, xử lý ammonia kém, bùn khó lắng và trôi ra khỏi bể lắng, hiệu suất năng lượng thấp, vận hành quá tải và nhiều điều kiện khác do quản lý bùn sinh học kém.

Since the discovery of the activated sludge process in 1913 many analytical methods have been applied to optimize plant performance. These analytical measurements report the conditions in the lanes, but none provide data regarding the health of the plant's biomass. As a result, many plants fall victim to toxic influent, clarifier bulking, poor ammonia removal, solids carry-over, poor energy performance, over-aeration, excessive wasting, non-compliant discharge and many other conditions that result from poor sludge management.
